Early start, we're starting to get the system down. Harry is having drone problems, so no flying on this trip.
Ellen's truck, I-17 to Stoneman Lake Road, West. We were planning to look for some Indian artifact areas that Dad had visited years ago. The freeway has of course been greatly expanded and improved many since then, however, and the roads alongside run in different places, so we were unable to make that search. (No big deal.)
We continued on the very rough dirt road that goes west from the SL road exit, and stopped briefly to look at an unusual rock structure 30 or so yards from the road. It turned out to be just a very elaborate post made to hold a metal sign prohibiting motorized offroad travel. Actually the terrain is so rough in this area, that it was hard enough to get anywhere staying on the road.
We continued a mile or so westward, then parked the truck and walked the remaining distance to the rim of Rattlesnake Canyon.
I didn't know the name of the area, or I would have been a little more careful strolling around.
Here's some interesting rocks, we were lichen them. (Rimshot.)
I wish I had taken a few more pictures here; the rock at the bottom of this pic had "calved" off a huge chunk, because the softer layer below was eroding away. Pretty cool.
Harry and Ellen continued a ways down the rugged road from this point, and found a nice little campsite. Here's a link to Ellen's pics.
It was about 9 AM by this time, so we were starting to think about lunch! We backtracked to the other side of I-17, and drove the moderate distance to Stoneman Lake. The water level there is really low.
There were a couple of other groups there, but there was a nice picnic spot. We hogged out and hung around for an hour or so.
Here's a funky old tree.
This was kind of a short trip, but it was nice to get home a little earlier than usual. Thanks family for a fun day!
